Dry Mouth (Xerostomia)

CAUSES:

  • Certain medications
  • Autoimmune disease like SJOGREN’s Syndrome
  • Radiotherapy in head and neck area
  • Chemotherapy
  • Hormonal changes
  • Uncontrolled Diabetes
  • Oral Infections

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS:

  • Difficulty in chewing, swallowing and speaking
  • Altered taste
  • Increases chances of dental caries
  • Teeth demineralisation
  • Teeth sensitivity
  • Oral Infections

RECOMMENDATIONS (DO’S):

  • Brush at least twice a day with fluoridated toothpaste
  • Floss everyday
  • Use a good lip balm or petroleum jelly every 1-2 hours
  • Drink water while eating carefully
  • Keep sipping water
  • Suck on ice cubes
  • Visit the dentist regularly (at least twice a year)
  • Ask your dentist about prescription fluoride gel and other fluoride products
  • Chew on sugarless chewing gums
  • Use humidifier at night
  • RECOMMENDATIONS (DON’TS):
  • Eat spicy and salty
  • Eat sugary and sticky foods
  • Consume alcohol and caffeine products
  • Smoke or use other tobacco products
  • OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS:
  • Some patients benefits from OTC products for dry mouth like lozenges, mouth sprays, mouth wash, oils, gels and so on
